In the early 1930's, GSM pioneered the initial line of products to provide oil fields with an armor-protected hose that would take an intense combination of abrasion and heat, resist severe kinking that reduces the hose ID and, thus the rate of flow of materials. The success of this venture broadened the application base of these products; including protection of cable in oil drilling and, later, for air brake hose in rail cars, furnace door hose in steel mills and use in the glass making industries. In the early sixties, GSM produced the industry's first armor-covered oxygen and water hose for use in the basic oxygen process for making steel.
